Creating global conservation programs for restoration of desert species and habitats

Reneco was founded in 1986 by a group of visionaries dedicated to creating a global conservation program for restoration of desert species and habitats.

Significant declines in the Houbara Bustard populations were observed, threatening to end the historical tradition of Arab Falconry. Reneco was engaged by His Royal Highness Prince Saud Al Faisal, to establish the first captive breeding project dedicated to desert duelling species - the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) in Taif, Saudi Arabia. Charismatic species extinct in the wild (Arabian oryx, red neck ostriches) and endangered ones (Houbara Bustards) were bred in captivity and reintroduced into the wild as their habitats were restored.

In 1995, Reneco was committed by His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late President of the United Arab Emirates, to establish the Emirates Center for Wildlife Propagation (ECWP) in Morocco. Guided by the vision of the Late Sheikh Zayed in 1977, the effort to restore and conserve the Houbara Bustard populations globally became the largest single species wildlife conservation program in the world.

Thirty years later, numerous centres for Houbara Bustard propagation are being operated under Reneco’s expertise in Morocco, the UAE, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, producing thousands of birds every year. These comprise the most successful reinforcement programs in the world for both the Asian (Chlamydotis macqueenii) and North African (Chlamydotis undulata) Houbara Bustards.
